Now, don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to end the book and be able to say you now know what it’s like to go through something like that – unless, of course, you actually have (then I would just like to say, I love you, I’m sorry, there aren’t enough or any words). I can honestly say this book is great for this.
I chose this book because I wanted to try and get any sort of understanding I could about the trials young adults forced into this position face. Although, it’s extremely evident at the end of the book that the end of high school is not where her story ends. We are on Eden’s journey from the moment she decides not to disclose information regarding her attack to the end of her high school years – arguably one of the most transformative time of any person’s life. The book is split into four parts, Eden’s freshman year, sophomore year, junior year, senior year. In The Way I Used to Be, we follow Eden, a young, normal, adolescent teenager through her high school years following an assault by her brother’s best friend the previous summer. If these types of things make you uncomfortable (although, I think these things should naturally make us uncomfortable), or trigger you, this may not be the book for you. I should warn you before reading any further – this book is about a young girl who was sexually assaulted. The Way I Used to Be is a book about something very real in our very real world. I must’ve been doing an opposites thing that day.
I picked this book up around the same time I picked up Scythe.
