Her writing is spare, her plotting intricate, and she is stingy with clues along the way - as a good mystery/thriller writer should be. Her investigation propels the action throughout the rest of the book.Īuthor Foley tells this tale in short chapters, each from the perspective of Jess or one of the other residents, all in the first person. Jess soon realizes the building holds secrets, strange spaces, and possible danger but she digs her heels in to discover her brother’s fate. The overall message from the group, spoken and unspoken, is “go away - not wanted here.” Nick appears friendly and sympathetic to her plight but none of the other occupants are welcoming or forthcoming.

Antoine lives in the first-floor apartment. Nick, her brother’s old friend, occupies the second floor. Jess meets young and seemingly-nervous Mimi, the fourth-floor occupant, along with her roommate, Camille. The penthouse is the domain of Sophie, an elegant, fabulously rich, older woman married to an absent Jacques. The narrative takes off from there as Jess works to get answers from the residents of a building swanky enough to have a concierge and one occupant per floor. She resolves to find Ben or at least learn what has happened to him. Jess finds a broken chain on the floor - one that held a St. Her brother is nowhere to be found, yet his wallet is there and his cat has blood on its fur. She finagles her way into the high-security building and then into Ben’s third-floor apartment. This, after he’d been in touch with specific directions only hours ago. He doesn’t answer at the locked-gate entry or respond to her calls or texts. The mystery accelerates when Jess arrives at her brother’s address. She reflects on how fortunate Ben was to have been adopted by a great family and receive a prestigious education. Her life is a mess and has been since they were orphaned and she was forced into foster care.

She’s broke, speaks no French and is seeking refuge with her brother. She’s running from an unnamed situation in Brighton, England. Jess enters the story as she makes her way from the Gare du Nord to the address her brother reluctantly supplied her. Her timing is terrible - he’s about move out of the building. Ben is uncomfortable with the imminent arrival of his younger half-sister, Jess. One of its tenants is an Englishman named Ben Daniels, who was invited to take an apartment there at a surprisingly low rate by an old Cambridge University friend. In fact, most of the action takes place in an elegant, if slightly-outdated apartment building located in an exclusive area of the city.

Best-selling author Lucy Foley’s new release is “The Paris Apartment,” an atmospheric thriller wrapped in a mystery, lots of mysteries.
